2020 Plans

Posted by Brad on Tue 31 December 2019

I try not to put too much emphasis on new year resolutions or goals since I prefer continuous improvement that isn't dependent on a time of year. That said I've been having trouble organizing my thoughts lately and have been hopping between home projects a bit more than I'd like. So this is by no means a list for the year but maybe the next quarter.

Technical

Nebula Overlay Network/VPN

Slack recently released their Nebula Overlay Network to the world and it looks pretty cool. Its similar to zerotier but self-hosted with some additional things like groups and firewall rules. Also it's written in Go so a bit easier to deal with if I ever get curious. My original plan for it was simply to secure my home lab and flatten out my network but today I also started thinking I could probably lower my reliance on Google Drive if I set up a Nextcloud server (though maybe my existing nfs set up would work as well). Unfortunately it doesn't have an android client yet, so it's not quite perfect. It also seems to want IPs defined for the clients so may have to implement some sort of IPAM instead of just letting dhcp do its thing.

I'm hoping to use some post-processors with terraform to generate the client certs but haven't thought it through too much. The end goal will be any new system that is provisioned is automatically configured at the same time. I'm also not sure I'll do any routing with it but could be useful to create a full vpn solution.

Nextcloud

As mentioned above if I can get Nebula set up I could replace Google Drive without having to worry about exposing Nextcloud publicly.

Email Server

I was working on learning go and writing a terraform module... Gmail's labeling has also been kind of failboating lately so maybe it's time to set up my own at least as an alternative if I need it. Still, it feels like more work than it's worth so probably won't be a priority.

Non-Technical

  • Fix my snowblower (2023 update: replaced carb for 2nd time and snowblower is running good)
  • get back into woodcarving (2023 have not done any woodcarving for a while)
  • continue lifting weights (2023 lifting 1-2 times a week)
  • Notes/Journal

Note from 2023, I found this in my drafts and think it's in good enough shape to publish.
