Galen Leather Journal Cover

For a while I've been wanting to take my journal with me more. Same for my kindle. The idea is if I have them close by then I'm more likely to use them. I started out looking at e-ink writing tablets, but those all have various drawbacks that I couldn't get past. If I can't combine my kindle and notebook I might as well make it easy to cary both.

Looking around I found Galen Leather, specifically their a5 notebook and ipad mini cover. Of course the forest green color helped seal the deal. I also picked up a cool brass ruler/straight edge.

Originally, I was a bit worried about the added bulk, but it's actually just right. I have a softcover Rhodia goalbook and it's kind of a challenge to write in if I don't have a desk or something to put it on. It's still a bit early but I think this leather cover might add just enough material to solve that problem, while not being overly cumbersome.

It also has a pen holder that I fully expected to be too small for my fat fountain pen. But it actually fits great if not just a bit tight to get it in place initially. That said, my fat pen does push the notebook right to the edge of the cover on top. I'll probably look for a better travel pen long term.

Of course my kindle fits in either flap, but does best in the back cover. Putting it in the front made an awkward lump that was not good for writing on. Similarly, I can fit my phone in the front cover but would have to take it out while writing.

In closing, this cover is satisfyingly substantial and feels like it will last forever.
